The birth of Sri Raghavendra Swamy is remembered as the arrival of a remarkable soul destined for spiritual service. Born in 1595 CE, during Phalguna Shukla Navami under the Mrigashirsha nakshatra, he belonged to a devout Kannada Madhva Brahmin family of the Gautama Gotra and Beegamudre lineage. His great-grandfather, Krishna Bhatta, was a celebrated veena scholar associated with Emperor Krishnadevaraya, while his father, Thimmanna Bhatta, was both a musician and religious scholar.

Thimmanna Bhatta and Gopikamba, already parents to Gururaja and Venkatamba, prayed for another son devoted to Vedic learning. During a pilgrimage to Tirupati, they undertook intense worship of Lord Venkateswara. Tradition says the deity appeared in a dream and promised them an extraordinary child. After returning, Gopikamba gave birth at Bhuvanagiri to a radiant boy named Venkatanatha. Even in childhood, he displayed unusual insight, questioning how the single sacred syllable “Om” could express the infinite nature of the Supreme.
