Appanacharya was one of Sri Raghavendra Swamy’s foremost disciples, closest companions and most devoted followers. He lived in Bichali, also known as Bhikshalaya, on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, where he hosted the saint and spent many years studying and engaging in spiritual discussions with him. Appanacharya composed the renowned Sri Raghavendra Stotra, including the widely recited verse beginning, “Poojyaaya Raghavendraaya…”

Appanacharya’s devotion to Sri Raghavendra Swamy is remembered through a remarkable tradition connected with the Sri Raghavendra Stotra. While crossing the flooded Tungabhadra River to reach his Guru’s Brindavana, he continued composing and chanting the hymn. When he was unable to complete one verse, devotees believe Sri Raghavendra Swamy’s voice finished it from inside the Brindavana—symbolizing the eternal spiritual bond between the Guru and his disciple.
