The Legend of Bhagiratha & Ganga
The Ancestral Curse
King Bhagirathan carried the burden of a family tragedy — his forefathers, the sons of King Sagara, had been reduced to ashes by Sage Kapila’s curse. Their souls could only be liberated if the holy river Ganga touched their remains.
Bhagiratha’s Penance
Determined to free his ancestors, Bhagiratha gave up royal comforts and undertook years of intense penance to please Lord Brahma. Brahma agreed to send Ganga to Earth but warned that her powerful descent could shatter the land unless someone could contain her flow.
Lord Shiva’s Grace
Bhagiratha then prayed to Lord Shiva, who compassionately agreed to catch Ganga in his jata (matted hair). As Ganga roared down from heaven, Shiva trapped her within his locks and gently released her in calming streams, ensuring the Earth remained safe.
Ganga’s Journey
Flowing gently behind Bhagiratha’s chariot, Ganga touched the ashes of his ancestors, granting them salvation, before continuing to the ocean — blessing all lands she passed.
